First, let’s give you a quick primer on how Google and other search engines work.

How Google (and other search engines) works
The first thing you need to keep in mind about Google is that Google is NOT the Internet. Just because your website doesn't appear on Google doesn't mean it's not on the Internet. Your website can be on the Internet without showing up in Google's search results for a particular keyword.

The way Google and other search engines display websites is this:
Google has automated computer systems running 24 hours a day that visit random websites on the Internet, take snapshots of each page, and archive them in a massive database.

As part of taking a snapshot of each web page, Google's system reads text and other content on a web page (such as photos, videos, audio files, etc.) and thereby determines the specific topic of the page. Google uses this collected data to determine which web pages to display and in what order for a particular keyword search.

Google SERP
In other words, Google's computer algorithms dynamically determine which web page on the Internet is most relevant to a specific keyword or key phrase and display it first. It then displays the second most relevant page, and so on. The resulting list of web pages is known as a search engine results page (SERP).

A SERP can be composed of several sections:

The top section usually consists of 3 or 4 paid text ads that relate to the keyword used to perform the search.
If Google identifies that the user's search intent is to find a local business nearby, it will add a section below the paid ads called Local Pack where companies and businesses are geolocated according to their Google My Business listings.
The third section consists of an “organic” (non-paid) list of web pages that are relevant to the keyword used to perform the search.

How do I improve my position on Google?
First, you need to make sure that your website has been indexed by Google. To find out if it is, type site:yourdomain.com into the Google search box, replacing yourdomain.com with your actual domain name. If you see a list of your website's pages, then Google has already indexed your website and will continue to visit it occasionally to check for updates. If your website is not listed, you need to get it indexed through Google Search Console . It will take 1-2 weeks for Google to visit and index your website.

Secondly, remember that Google will only show web pages that are relevant to the keyword you are searching for. The first step is to make sure that the text on your web page is related to the keyword in question. If it isn't, there's a good chance that Google won't show it.

Third, just because your website doesn’t appear on the first page doesn’t mean it doesn’t appear at all. Scroll down to the bottom of the results page and click “Next” for page 2 and so on. Your website may be on page 2, page 82, or somewhere in between.

Ok, my website is on Google, but it's on page 41! How do I get my website to rank on page 1?

Ah! You asked the million dollar question. An entire industry has been built to answer this question and millions of dollars are spent each year to do so! My first question for you is, “How much time do you have to rank?”

It sounds like a joke, but I'm serious... The good news is that there are two main ways to get your website to appear on the first page of Google:

You can pay to be on the first page of Google and it doesn't have to be a lot of money. This is called Google Ads.
You can get your website to rank “organically” without having to pay for ads.
I will explain both below…

Google Ads (Pay for positioning)
The quickest and easiest way to get to page 1 of Google for a particular keyword is to pay for an ad. You sign up with Google, choose the keywords you’d like to target, then “bid” (yes, like an auction) on how much you’d like to pay each time your ad is clicked. This is called “pay per click.” The higher you bid per click, the higher your ad will appear at the top of the page, all else being equal.

You can also set a daily budget so that when your budget is met, Google will no longer show your ad for that day, so it won't be clicked on and you won't be charged. For most industries, this is an easy and cheap way to appear on the first page of Google.

For other industries (like lawyers and technology software, for example), it can be very expensive. Some keywords cost up to $100 per click or more!

Consider hiring a Google Ads professional
Be careful with Google Ads. It makes it very easy to sign up and start running ads on its platform (Bing has a very similar platform). But if you don't know what you're doing, you can waste a lot of money with Google Ads. Considering the fact that I am a professional in creating, managing, and optimizing AdWords campaigns, I suggest you leave the creation and management of your Google Ads campaigns to a professional.

If the professional or agency you hire knows what they're doing, they'll more than pay for the investment. For example, if your professional or agency charges you a fee of $500/month to manage and optimize your AdWords campaigns, and they're doing things right, you should get much more than a $500/month benefit from hiring them.

There are literally hundreds of different settings and features you can add or tweak for any Google Ads campaign. If you don't set them all up correctly, you could be wasting or losing a lot of money each month. Hire a professional with proven results if you have the budget. If you don't have the budget to hire a professional to manage your Google Ads campaigns, I recommend staying away from paid search advertising.

Enter Google with organic positioning
The other way to get to page 1 of Google and other search engines is the organic or natural method. These are the top results that are displayed below the ads and Local Pack section on the search engine results pages (see chart above).

These results cannot be achieved by paying money to Google; they are achieved through careful, long-term optimization of many factors that Google uses to rank relevance. The practice of improving your web presence so that it appears organically on Google is called Search Engine Optimization (SEO).

Some of the most important factors that influence Google page 1 ranking are:

Quality and length of your page content: Your website pages should be filled with unique and useful information that will benefit your ideal client or customer. The more useful, the better, so you should pay special attention to high quality. Strive to help your target audience by creating quality content that they will want to consume (like this article!).
Quality and quantity of inbound links: If other sites link to yours, especially important sites that have content related to yours, then Google will rank your site higher in the SERPs. Third-party links to your website provide a “thumbs up” or vote of confidence that tells Google that it might be worth pushing your content up the results page.
Mobile-Friendly Website – Most people now use mobile phones to search for information on the web. Are your website pages optimized for mobile devices? Your site should be mobile-friendly and easy to navigate so that users on any device can find what they need quickly and easily.
Page Speed: Your web pages should load quickly on all devices. Slow loading web pages have a huge negative impact on your Google rankings. No one likes waiting several seconds for a website to load. You can run a free page speed test here or use a tool like Gtmetrix to test your website's page speed.
Keywords in page content: Obviously, if the keywords you're targeting actually appear on your site in the text and titles of your pages, you'll rank better for those keywords. Write your content for humans, but keep Google in mind. Don't overuse keywords. When in doubt, make it sound natural and understandable.
Domain name authority: The longer you have owned the domain, the better. The more quality content pages you have on your domain name, the better. Also, include keywords in your domain name if you can (although Google says this doesn't directly affect your rankings, it could help influence a user to click on your website over a competitor's).
Secure Pages: Your web pages should load over https to be secure. Google and normal humans like to see secure pages, even if you don't process credit cards or collect personal information. Get an SSL installed by your web hosting company so that all your pages load securely.
URL structure: “Pretty” URLs are better (https://digiofi.com/blog is better than https://pepitoperez.com/index.php&id=54). If your page URLs are human-readable, that’s a good thing.
Other important things you should do to rank on page 1 of Google
How to do Local SEO?
Create and optimize your Google My Business listing, especially if you are a business that serves only your local community (like a bakery or plumber). Then, try to get as many positive reviews as you can (without buying them…). This will greatly increase your chances of showing up in the Local Pack section on the first organic listing. This can be very good if you do it right!

The blog as a tool to position my website
One of the best things you can do to rank highly on Google is to start a blog and publish articles regularly. If you're not sure what to write about, think about the top 5 questions your customers ask you. Then, write a complete answer to each question - one blog post per question. Notice the title of this blog post?

How do links help my website rank?
Join your local Chamber of Commerce and get a listing on their website. Offer to write a guest article for the local newspaper or online magazine. They will often include a link to your website in the bio at the end of the article.

When does SEO work end?
Also, just because you rank well for one keyword or keyphrase doesn't mean you'll rank well for a similar keyword/keyphrase. And remember that Google is constantly updating its ranking algorithms, so today's rankings may not be the same as tomorrow's.

Expect to see your site rise and fall in the rankings on a daily or weekly basis – it may even drop out of the rankings altogether. That’s why SEO should always be ongoing.

Remember, your competitors are likely following the same protocols as you. They are likely optimizing their web presence using the same methods you are using. Keep blogging and earning links. Improve the content you already have on your website. A great deal of diligence and patience will pay off when you get that coveted spot at the top of page 1 of Google. Depending on your business, it could literally be worth millions of dollars in revenue.
Something that valuable will never be easy.
