One of these companies is UrbanPlay , which was born with the intention of designing and creating inclusive recreational spaces in Latin America, especially in Chile.
The main objective of this company is to ensure that everyone has the option of accessing these spaces and participating in the activities that take place there.
These inclusive parks are based on the Principles of Universal Design , developed by architect Ronald Mace in the 1990s and reproduced below:
Fair use.
Flexible use.
Simple and intuitive use.
Perceptible information.
Error tolerance.
Minimal physical effort , not applicable to playgrounds, since their intention is to physically challenge the little ones.
Adequate approach size and use.
There are many factors to take into account when designing these parks. The materials used for the ground, the access to the activities, the delimitation of the spaces according to their function or the equipment used are some of the aspects that determine the design.
UrbanPlay stresses the importance of banishing the idea that an inclusive playground is focused exclusively on the accessibility of a child in a wheelchair: “Playgrounds surrounded by sand, with lots of high edges and no ramps are simply inaccessible for such children. And even if appropriate playground equipment is available, these children would need constant support. However, accessibility is only a small part of what makes a playground truly inclusive.”
