e are happy to announce that Tutanota has changed its name to Tuta. We are very happy to now be the only secure email provider with a four-letter domain: tuta.com – short and easy to spell! And that’s not all. The story of how we got the name is definitely cinematic. So grab some popcorn, sit back, and read on.

Since launching Tutanota in March 2014, we loved the name and its deep, clever meaning (“secure message” in Latin). Tutanota has proven to be the most secure email provider in the world and has built up a great reputation. But despite this, our name wasn’t the easiest to share over the phone or for people to remember during a casual conversation. That’s why we’re delighted to announce that we’re now the only secure email provider with a four-letter-com domain: tuta.com – short and easy to remember!

Check out our YouTube video about our name Tutanota , the secure email service that quickly became popular all over the world. However, people also asked us for a shorter domain, and we have wanted to fulfill this wish for a long time!

A meeting in São Paulo
In the summer of 2022 we brainstormed to find a engineering email list better, shorter domain for Tutanota. The problem was that most of the ideas we had were already taken. So when we looked for domains that were still available, the list became quite unattractive:

Fortunately, that same summer our colleague Vitor, originally from Brazil, had planned a trip to São Paulo. Even before our fruitless brainstorming session, we knew that the domain tuta.com was in the hands of someone in Brazil. Long story short: Vitor contacted the domain owner - who wanted to remain anonymous, which we respected - and sat down with him in a restaurant. After a splendid meal and a friendly conversation, the two signed a contract and the domain tuta.com was transferred to us.
