The Evolution of QR Codes and Why You Need Them in 2025

Post by surovy113 »

What do you think are the common features of the products and services trending in 2025? Do words like “necessary” and “urgent” come to mind? Probably! It’s no wonder that QR codes have become part of the modern train, despite being around for over three decades. Japan invented QR codes to encode more characters than good old barcodes and China further popularized them. And the pandemic has caused the entire world to adapt the 2D advancement for many purposes. Another combination of words that we should follow would be “minimalist” but “multi-purpose”. Instead of a separate solution for each requirement, the consumer pattern is shifting towards achieving more with less. Unfortunately, COVID 19 has instilled a consciousness that no other world problems, such as climate change and waste management, can.

Even an unprecedented move like India's nightly currency ban hasn't seen such a surge in QR codes for payments as the country grapples with the virus onslaught.

So what is a QR code , after all? A Quick Response (QR) Code is an advanced version of a barcode. How? A barcode is a nurse database one-dimensional code with just 20 characters encoded in 20 lines. In contrast, its 2D counterpart, Quick Response, can encode 7,000 characters in the form of dots. Barcodes require a special scanning machine, while a QR code can be scanned by any smartphone camera.

Human touch, otherwise a gesture of warmth in the ordinary world, has become a danger in 2020. Therefore, companies have started using QR codes for several purposes other than payments. A popular example can be scanning QR codes for menus in restaurants or in hotel rooms. Another is scanning QR codes for PNR web check-in at airports.

Have you used QR codes for payments but still don't understand the fuss around them?

QR codes are popular in 2025 because:
They are seamlessly entering our daily lives, waiting for us to use them in as many ways as possible. Payments are just courtship; we can experience several other aspects if we give our best to a new relationship.
