Learning in the brain
Many brain areas are involved in learning, especially learning something completely new. And multiple senses. For a storage in your memory, you have to be conscious and alert ( called arousal in the literature), motivated and have attention and concentration.

imprinting and coding (can be visual or verbal or through association)
storage and consolidation (it must be relevant and repeatable)
recall (reproduction, the more often the better remembered)
The core molecule that ensures connections in learning is BDNF ( Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor). BDNF strengthens new connections (synapses) between neurons/nerve cells and ensures consolidation in memory. Synaptic plasticity is important for learning processes and a well-functioning memory.

A synapse is a connection between two neurons. BDNF plays a role in the formation of new synapses.

Building a good cognitive reserve
What factors positively influence your BDNF level? And as you get older: how do you build up a good cognitive reserve yourself? Make sure:

exercise. Regular exercise increases BDNF levels and plasticity in adults and even promotes long-term memory
consume fewer calories
social activities: did you know that you learn the most from unlikely friends? And work or surround yourself with young people
doing or learning new things, preferably things that are outside your comfort zone. When learning another language, for example, choose a language that is far removed from your bed. Tip: here is a nice infographic about 'How to keep learning at a later age'
an enriched environment in which multiple senses are stimulated. An environment that challenges you to make an effort. Such as walking meetings.
Doing or learning new things helps to keep your brain fit. The self-learner par excellence is of course the autodidact. Autodidacts learn throughout their lives and are intrinsically motivated, determined, have self-confidence and a real passion for knowledge.
