Huge victory for Internet freedom: Google must sell its Chrome browser

Post by Aklima@42 »

s CEO of Tuta Mail, an encrypted email service that TechCrunch has called an “encrypted alternative to Gmail,” I welcome the Justice Department’s bold move to curb Google’s dominance. This landmark decision doesn’t just regulate a single company — it stands up for fairness, competition, and a healthier internet ecosystem.

At Tuta we have seen first-hand how Google's communication email list monopolistic practices harm smaller operators. Earlier this year, our website tuta.com was suddenly delisted from Google's search results without warning or explanation .

This was a big problem for us: As a small competitor of Gmail, we need to be visible on the Internet, especially via search results, so that people looking for secure and private email solutions actually have a chance to find our service and sign up for a free email account .

Overnight, our visibility dropped dramatically, stunting our growth and forcing us to compete on a level playing field. This experience highlighted the enormous power Google has over who sees what on the Internet. Google’s power has become so great that today businesses pay Google (via Google Search Ads) to have their company’s website appear first when people – guess what – search on Google for that exact company.

Breaking the monopoly
In my opinion, it is outrageous that tech companies like Tresorit have to pay Google – a tech giant that competes with most tech companies, including Tresorit – for a top search position. In this way, tech companies feed their own competitor – Google – which makes it easier for Google to maintain its monopolistic position.
