On Friday, January 17 , hours before the ban was set to begin, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the government's decision, holding that the First Amendment did not apply in this case because TikTok's ownership could change hands without compromising free speech.
On Saturday the 18th, hours before the law special lead into effect, TikTok suspended its services in the United States, leaving more than 170 million users without access to the platform. The app also disappeared from the Android and iOS stores.
January 19, 2025: Donald Trump announces he will delay the shutdown and the platform resumes operations.
Following President-elect Donald Trump 's intervention , which announced a 90-day moratorium to facilitate a solution and avoid the ban, TikTok reinstated its services in the United States, although it was no longer available in the country's app stores. Trump proposed that the company become 50% U.S.-owned to address national security concerns.
